Swanson has a proven track record of fighting battles that matter for middle-class Minnesotans

St Anthony, MN – During her first term as Minnesota’s attorney general, Lori Swanson earned a distinctive reputation for standing up to powerful entities on behalf of middle-class Minnesotans. Pointing to that tenacity in its decision, the International Union of Operating Engineers Local 49 endorsed Swanson in her re-election bid.

“Since taking office, Swanson has persistently fought to protect working Minnesotans against the abusive tactics of big business,” said Local 49’s business manager Glen Johnson. “From combating predatory lenders to fighting health care companies that deny services or overcharge patients, Swanson has been an ideal consumer advocate.”

Swanson was the country’s first Attorney General to protect seniors’ lifesavings against a widespread insurance company practice that duped people into long-term annuities which carried penalties for early withdrawal. Her lawsuits against these insurers resulted in nearly a billion dollars being refunded to Minnesota seniors.

She also went on the attack to protect homeowners, filing lawsuits against companies charging advance fees to help people behind on their bills. These businesses pocketed the money and did little to help. In addition, Swanson’s legislation to crack down on unscrupulous mortgage lenders armed Minnesota with the toughest consumer protections in the U.S., and stands as a national model.

“We’re proud to partner with and support an attorney general who is known for her intelligence, determination, and strong work ethic,” added Johnson.
