For Local 49 member, Ronnie Trejo, the motorcycle ride he takes each June is more than just a cruise with friends. It’s the chance to make a difference.
For the past six years, Ronnie and his brothers, David and Victor, have put together a motorcycle rally to benefit the Minnesota Amber Alert Network to protect children from abduction.
Because of their success, Ronnie, his brothers and other volunteers have started their own nonprofit organization, the Minnesota Amber Alert Fundraiser. “We wanted to do something good on our bikes,” said Ronnie. “This was a newer cause and we thought it would be a good fit for our group. We are very dedicated to creating awareness, raising funds and having a good time in the process.”
On June 14, Ronnie and friends will hold their 2008 rally, starting at and finishing at the Pointe restaurant in Hastings. More than 200 bikes will make the 170 mile trip through scenic cities including Prescott, Red Wing, Wabasha and New Trier. In addition, there will be a kick-off event the night before, a car show and a post-rally party at the Pointe with food, music and a silent auction.
“Last year we raised $18,000. This year we want to raise more than $20,000,” said Ronnie. “We have received so much support from all types of people. This is a great example of what happens when people get together for the greater good.”
With each donation the nonprofit makes to the Amber Alert Network more children are being protect from potential abduction. “We help to support training for police officers, help purchase technology and educate the public about Amber Alerts.”
Ronnie says that the cost of an Amber Alert is as much as $5,000 to post message on television, Web sites and on billboards. “Every time I see an alert come across, I feel personally involved,” said Ronnie. “That’s when I know I’m making a difference.”
Ronnie credits his fellow Local 49 members for their support. “From day one they have been very accommodating and willing to do anything to help us,” he says. “Their support has given us an identity. I’m proud to say that I am a part of this great group. There is a sincere love for the community and worthwhile causes from these people.”
