Right to Work – know the facts
So called “Right to Work” (we call them Right to Work for Less) laws are important for union members to understand. Essentially these laws are designed to bust unions. They bust the union by not allowing the collection of union dues from members. Not paying union dues might sound good on the surface – but look deeper, the big business groups that push these laws don’t have your interests in mind.
What they don’t say is that the union has all of the responsibility to represent members, without the ability to collect the finances to do so. Very quickly what will happen is the union will go broke. That means, no business agents to help you negotiate contracts, no lawyers to help you with arbitrations, no political staff to make sure we get jobs, no nothing, the infrastructure of the union is gone.
Gone with it is your ability to defend yourself, and your ability to negotiate a contract. And that is the goal of “Right to Work” laws, to make sure you have no power, to make sure you are at the mercy of the corporate boss.
